Why does Stay Poor the SpellThief use a mace? And why 2?

Spellthieves only get simple weapon proficiency. That doesn't leave a lot of options: Club, Heavy Crossbow, Light Crossbow, Dagger, Punching Dagger, Dart, Gauntlet, Spiked Gauntlet, Javelin, Longspear, Heavy Mace, Light Mace, Morningstar, Quarterstaff, Shortspear, Sickle, Sling, Spear, or Unarmed Strike. And we hardly get any feats, so I don't want to waste one on Martial Weapon Proficiency.
I was originally going to make him a two weapon fighter. That's not until 11th level now, but I figured I'd just keep the weapons as is for now so he has them once he's got TWF.
I'm trying to get every possible sneak attack in to use the Spellthief abilities (hence all the flanking and initiative feats), plus also be useful in combat when there's not a caster to attack (hence all the special material bolts, high Strength, etc.). And Spring Attack to avoid being near big hurty things due to his crappy armor class and low hit points. His new feat, Battle Blessing, is from Complete Champion. It lets hiim cast Paladin spells as swift actions. Now I just have to get his Wis up so he can cast 3rd level spells.
